The Farmplanner of the Year competition has been run by the Institute of Agricultural Management in association with Farmplan and the support of Farmers Weekly annually since 1996. It is open to any College/University that teaches Farm Management.
The continuing success of the competition relies on finding a suitable case study and this year Blagdon Farms, part of Blagdon Estate near Newcastle upon Tyne had offered themselves.
"Four Questions were posed and the five person team from SRUC were chosen as the worthy winners." said Tim Brigstocke, Chairman of the Judges, "the SRUC team showed a very good appreciation of the aims and objectives of the Estate and answered the questions posed on that basis. Suggesting minor tweaks to the arable and dairy cow enterprises, introducing Shetland sheep as well as a traditional apple orchard selling to the Blagdon Farm Shop, which would develop its own more distinctive branding. All good, sensible and achievable for the farm which would improve sustainability and enhance financial performance" concluded Mr Brigstocke.
